Make Your Time Count

"People are frugal guarding their personal property; but as soon as it comes to squandering time they are most wasteful of the one thing in which it is right to be stingy." — Seneca

Most of us would never leave the door of our home unlocked. We keep a close eye on our investments, our vehicles, and our finances. Yet many of us casually give away our most valuable asset every day without much thought: our time.

The Roman philosopher Seneca recognized this nearly 2,000 years ago, and his observation is just as relevant today. Unlike money, time cannot be earned back. Once an hour passes, it is gone forever. We all receive the same 24 hours each day, but the difference between an ordinary life and an extraordinary one is often determined by how those hours are invested.

In today's world, distractions are endless. Social media, emails, television, news cycles, and countless notifications compete for our attention. It's easy to reach the end of a day wondering where the time went. The challenge is not simply being busy—it is being intentional.

The most successful people I know are not necessarily the smartest or the most talented. They are the most deliberate with their time. They understand that every "yes" to one thing is a "no" to something else. They prioritize what matters most: their families, their health, their businesses, their personal growth, and the relationships that enrich their lives.

One of the simplest exercises you can do is ask yourself a question at the end of each day:

Did I spend my time today in a way that moved me closer to the life I want to live?

If the answer is yes, keep going. If the answer is no, tomorrow is an opportunity to make a different choice.

For those of us fortunate enough to live in the mountains, this lesson carries additional meaning. We are surrounded by opportunities to create memories—skiing fresh powder, hiking alpine trails, fishing quiet streams, sharing meals with friends, or simply watching the sunset over the peaks. These moments are easy to postpone in pursuit of "someday." But someday has a way of becoming never.

The reality is that our lives are built one day at a time. The habits we practice daily become the years we remember - small decisions compound: fifteen minutes spent learning a new skill, a phone call to an old friend, a walk with your spouse, time spent with your children, a conversation with a client. These moments may seem insignificant in isolation, but together they create a meaningful life.

As we move through the year, take inventory of where your time is going. Protect it as carefully as you would your most valuable possession. Be intentional about what deserves your attention and courageous enough to eliminate what does not.

After all, money lost can often be replaced. Opportunities may come around again. But time is the one resource that only moves in a single direction.

Make your time count.

"The mountains remind us that life is not measured by the years we accumulate, but by the experiences we create along the way."
